Planning for happiness and success after High School is such an important part of Growing up. Individual Education Plans (IEP’s) are to help provide a free appropriate public education designed to meet unique needs and prepare students for further education, employment and independent living. Parent awareness is very important to support this process. The thought that our child with a disability is NEVER going to leave home begins to hit home as goals for the future are being discussed and met. Parent’s must think and plan ahead- not waiting until just before graduation-because that is TOO LATE!

Congress finds that a DISABILITY is a natural part of the human experience and in no way diminished the right of the individuals to participate in or contribute to society. This includes such things as:

·         Living independently

·         Enjoying self-determination

·         Making choices

·         Pursuing meaningful careers

·         Enjoying full inclusion and integration in the economical, political, social, cultural, and economic mainstreaming in American society.

Disability is indeed a natural part of human existence. Thank you for this honest look at the IEP process at that point.

Jan thanks for the tips and the support.
As a parents we need to be involve in our children education and feel very good about the relationship with teachers at the same time.

  3. I totally agree with everything you stated. Every person gets an opportunity to make those choices. I was wondering, when would it be ok to agree with child that they were welcome to continue living at home? I mean, even some of our higher functioning friends might like to be welcomed back into the fold – would that be ok? Some get so lonely.

Jan great job and you are absolutely right as parents we need to be constantly thinking about the future of our children.

  5. Great thoughts Jan. Navigating the process of IEP’s can be a complicated task. It’s wonderful that all you PIC ladies are there to help supprt and encourage parents through the IEP system.
